Whitby will forever be associated with Captain James Cook. The young Cook began his naval career in Whitby and by pure coincidence would end up commanding Whitby-built ships on his famous voyages of discovery.

In the BBC poll for its 100 Greatest Britons series Captain Cook was voted as the 12th greatest Briton in history, finishing ahead of Queen Victoria and the Duke of Wellington.
