Whitby & Whitby Abbey
Whitby
This tour tells the story of the town and abbey from Saxon England until the German bombardment during the First World War.
The story of Whitby Abbey will be brought to life in such a way that although you won't see the Abbey for much of your walk, you'll gain an appreciation of its historical importance. Admission to Whitby Abbey is not included with this tour.

Whitby Abbey
Lionel Charlton wrote that there was ‘nothing considerable about Whitby up until 1600 except from its abbey.' It's not quite true but much of the town's story is centred upon the Abbey throughout Saxon and Norman times. We'll tell you about St Hilda, King Oswy and the poet Caedmon.
We'll also cover the Abbey's demise at the hands of both Henry VIII and the German Navy during the First World War.
